The project took a very small one lane road and made a 3 lane highway through the rain forest above Hilo. The project consisted of 500,000 cubic yards of lava excavation that included volcanic ash stabilization. The asphalt plant and crusher were mobilized from the mainland and were operated in a desert at an altitude of 6,500 feet just ten miles from the near sea level project that received 200 inches of rainfall per year.
